Permanent placements: the most profitable work you're probably under-managing

September 1, 2026 · 6 min read · Dumpster Rental HQ team

A permanent placement is a container that stays on a customer's site and gets swapped or emptied on a schedule — a restaurant's 6-yard, an apartment complex's 20-yard, a manufacturer's 40-yard for scrap. One account can be worth more than a hundred residential rentals, with a fraction of the phone calls. Here is how to run them well.

Who buys permanent placements

Property managers, restaurants and retail, contractors on long builds, manufacturers and warehouses, and municipalities. They care about reliability of the swap more than the price of the swap. If you show up when you said you would for six months, you keep the account through the next price increase.

Price the rental and the haul separately

Charge a monthly rental for the container and a per-haul (or per-empty) fee that covers the trip and the disposal, with included tons and overage the same way you would on a temporary rental. Separating them means a slow month does not become a free month and a busy month is billed correctly.

What goes in the agreement

  • Term (12 months is common) with automatic renewal and a notice period
  • Service frequency and what "on-call" means, including response time
  • Monthly rental, haul rate, included tons, overage per ton
  • Prohibited materials and what happens when they show up
  • Rate-change notice (30 days), fuel surcharge language
  • Container damage, access and placement responsibility
  • Minimum hauls per month if you need to protect the container's earning power

Electronic signatures on these agreements are enforceable under the federal ESIGN Act and state UETA laws when consent and the record are captured. Have it signed electronically and attached to the customer record so nobody has to find the paper copy when the customer disputes an invoice.

Bill on schedule, per container

The failure mode for permanents is not pricing; it is forgetting. A container that was supposed to be swapped Tuesday and wasn't, an invoice that went out two weeks late because the owner does them by hand at month end, a can that came off site in March and kept billing until June. The fix is a plan per container that generates the swap stops ahead of time and invoices on its own schedule. When one can leaves a three-can site, that plan ends and the other two keep billing correctly.

Watch the report, not the inbox

A "Recurring & permanent" report that lists every active plan, its next service, its next bill date and its lifetime value is the whole account-management job for most companies. Review it weekly; call anyone whose hauls dropped.

Permanent placements in Dumpster Rental HQ create one plan per container, generate swap stops on the dispatch board, invoice on schedule, and carry the signed agreement — on the Pro and Fleet plans.
